A Boy and His Atom

The above picture is the poster of the world’s smallest stop-motion film called "A Boy and His Atom". This short movie being one minute in length was released by IBM in 2013. It can be considered as a demonstration of capabilities of STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) in manipulating and imaging individual atoms. About 10,000 atoms were precisely positioned into about 250 different situations whose obtained images were used to create the film. It may be interesting to know that the scanning tunneling microscope used to obtain this film had a weight of 2 tons and operated at -268 °C. Also, it had won the Nobel prize in physics in 1986 for its inventors, Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer. It is possible to find and watch this film on youtube or some other websites by a simple search.
