Phosphorus Sulfides

If we add one or more sulfur atoms to the P4 tetrahedron by substitution of one or more P-P units by P-S-P groups and sometimes addition of one or more exo S atoms, we get phosphorus sulfides with the molecular formula P4Sx where x≤10. Such phosphorus sulfides are famous among binary compounds of phosphorus and sulfur. Among them, phosphorus pentasulfide (P4S10) and phosphorus sesquisulfide (P4S3) have commercial significance where the former is used in the production of organosulfur compounds and the latter is used in the production of "strike anywhere matches".
