Binary Prefixes

Today, computers play major roles in any branches of science. Therefore, it is good to be familiar with some common related terms like binary prefixes. Binary prefixes refer to prefixes associated with binary multiples. They are commonly powers of 1024 (210). New regulations require that SI prefixes such as kilo (103), mega (106) and giga (109) are only used in the decimal sense while in the case of binary ones, binary prefixes such as kibi (1024), mebi (10242) and gibi (10243) are used. For example, one kilobyte should only mean one thousand bytes and for 1024 bytes, one kibibyte should be used.
